POKER CALL EV · EXACT DIRECT-SHOWDOWN MATH
Price tells you whether.
EV tells you how much.
Pot odds and expected value are two views of the same call-or-fold boundary. Here is the exact connection, without solver claims or hidden assumptions.
01 · MEANING
What call EV measures.
Expected value is the average result if the same decision could be repeated many times under the same assumptions. RiverLab compares calling with folding now, so folding is the zero-BB baseline.
If you call and win, your net gain relative to folding is the current pot. Your call comes back inside the final pot. If you call and lose, your loss is the call amount.
Counting the final pot as profit would count your own call as winnings. The EV formula separates the amount you can win from the amount you risk.
02 · WORKED EXAMPLE
Nine clean outs, facing 30 BB.
The current pot is 90 BB after the opponent's bet. Calling costs 30 BB. With nine clean outs and one card to come, the hit probability is exactly 9 ÷ 46.
Hit probability9 ÷ 46 = 19.6%
Break-even equity30 ÷ 120 = 25.0%
Call EV(19.6% × 90) − (80.4% × 30) = −6.5 BB
Result: fold. The clean hit rate is below the price, and calling loses 6.5 BB on average under these assumptions.
03 · SAME BOUNDARY
Pot odds and EV agree.
A call has positive EV exactly when its win probability exceeds the break-even price: call ÷ (current pot + call).
| Example | Pot / call | Clean equity | Price | Call EV | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Negative EV | 90 / 30 BB | 19.6% | 25.0% | −6.5 BB | Fold |
| Positive EV | 100 / 20 BB | 19.6% | 16.7% | +3.5 BB | Call |
| Exactly break-even | 37 / 9 BB | 19.6% | 19.6% | 0.0 BB | Break-even |
04 · MODEL LIMITS
Exact math needs exact assumptions.
- Every counted out makes a final winner.
- Every runout without a counted out loses.
- No future betting, rake, ties, or dirty outs are modeled.
- No opponent range or fold equity is modeled.
This is mathematically correct under those assumptions. It is not a solver result, a GTO frequency, or a complete strategy recommendation.

QUICK ANSWERS
Call-EV questions.
What is call EV in poker?
It is the average chip change from calling rather than folding under a defined model of winning and losing outcomes.
Why does the formula use the current pot?
The current pot is what you gain if the call wins. Your own call is returned inside the final pot, so counting it as profit would double-count it.
Does positive EV always make calling correct?
Only under the assumptions used to calculate the probabilities. Dirty outs, future betting, rake, ties, and opponent ranges can change a real decision.
